What Is Vastu

Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian science to help person(s) physical & mental stature balancing. It is the science of energies or you can say, transmission of energies. 

 We all know there are different energies in us and our surroundings. How many times we have experienced that if people around us are energetic, we too get energetic and if they are dull or sad, our energy levels too go down and we might start sounding low. Same way, the place where we spend most of our time, including sleep time, if has low energies, we feel the effect on our body & mind too. Hence, it is okay to say that all buildings, even the land on which a building is erected has vibrations of energy associated with it. Vastu Shastra helps to confiscate negative energies and enhance all the positivity around a person, family, office, business occupying a building to prosper. Vastu Shastra is a part of Stapatya Veda, a part of Atharva Veda.

                                  There are some other shastra too that pass over the knowledge of Vastu Shastra like Vishwakarma Prakash, Samraangan Sutradhar, Kashyap Shilpshastra and many more. There is an interesting story behind the origination of Vastu Shastra. Once God Shiva was fighting against demon called Andhak. The fight took long time (as per earth’s year- consider as several years) and perspiration of God Shiva started forming as a figure. Soon after Andhak got killed, this figure drank all his blood. His hunger was still not satisfied. He started to eat anything and everything that came his way and soon he grew big that started casting an eclipse-like on earth. This made tri-dev (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) worried. They asked help from Ashta-Dikapalakas (Gods of eight directions). They all jumped on the figure against the earth with his head in North-East and legs in South-West direction. Brahma ji taken the hold of his center to keep him down. The figure couldn’t understand what had happened suddenly to him. As he was formed from God Shiva’s perspiration, he was immortal.

 God Brahma gave him name “Vastu Purush” and told that he would be worshipped before any sort of construction happens on land and by all who will occupy the building. Then God Brahma told to the Gods of eight directions (45 gods in all- who have pinned the Vastu Purush down) that if the construction on the land make any of the God upset, then Vastu Purush can take over that direction & make the inhabitant void of that direction’s happiness & joy. 

                                                            Since then, Vastu Purush became an inseparable part of earth and the principles to keep all the 45 deities (called Vastu Purush mandala) happy, laid the foundation of Vastu Shastra. In all, Vastu-Shastra aims to make pleasant-sounding buildings which are in harmony with 5 elements (Earth, water, space air and fire), so that the human occupying the building/land, lives well balanced and happy life.
